Facebook Connecting the Web

The refusal of Facebook to join the OpenID initiative was seen as a selfish move by many. Then came word that they were working on their own method for connecting users on the Web through their Facebook login info. That appears now to have come to fruition with what has been dubbed Facebook Connect. Apparently we should be considering it our “passport to the Web” and since Monday, integrates several other popular websites like the Discovery Channel, The San Francisco Chronicle, news site Digg, Hulu and the genealogy site Geni. Many more are slated to join the party.
It’s a great idea but not a new one. We already mentioned the OpenID initiative (a little on the clunky side) and Microsoft with their Passport, connecting users via their hotmail address (privacy issues from third party sites saw an end to that one) so it remains to be seen whether this will actually take off. Personally I hope that it does and helps to reduce the number of username/password combinations I have to remember on a daily basis. Worth keeping an eye on.

Hi Rich, I enjoyed your breakout sessions a the NSA-MAC 2009 Intensive yesterday SO much. They were content rich, filled with great information and easy to follow. I am particularly interested in the Facebook aspect of business that you mentioned.I mentioned on my Facebook wall that I was going to the convention and there were lots of people who were interested. I will keep at it and get your posts. Again, thank you for being so generous with your information.
