I believe the chasm widens

Chasm

Chasm

While speaking on Saturday at eh National Speakers Association event it became clearer to me that what I have blogged about previously – has not gone away and in fact may have gotten wider. I believe there is a growing chasm between those who spend time with the inner workings of the Internet and those who are strictly users of the medium. This DUH! moment came during my session on how to start blogging while trying to explain what Word Press was. I had to stop for more than 5 minutes and explain to about 20% of the participants exactly what word press is and how it works either in place of or or in addtion to your existing website. Due to the nature of the group I just assumed that there was at least some familiarity with the Internet – and what I discovered is that there is a wider disparity than first thought with those who use the Internet and for some it is many hours a day, versus those who understand simple terms.

I am not beating up the group that was there – I am glad for the questions – as it turned out many just did not understand the interplay between their site and this program.

I speak at Widener University each year to a graduate level class and it is very apparent in this class and talking to my daughters and their friends that users do not make those who really understand.

Why is this an issue – in my opinion – if we do not take the time to teach more of the workings of the Internet we will limit the acceptance for things that might really be useful. I continue to be an evangelist as I trek off to Widener next month and I challenge the rest of you to choose a group like Rotary or your local chamber and do an Internet 101 program and find out just how much is missing and how much misinformation is out there. We need to teach along the way.

Let me know what you are doing in this regard.
