Internet Marketing not Advertising

Posted on | August 8, 2007 |

I wish folks would stop calling it Internet advertising and start using the phrase Internet marketing. With the talk of “Universal Search”, “Targeted Search”, “Personalized Search” it just tells me that the Wild Wild West show is still in its infancy - duh!

If you want to be sure you are doing the right thing for your client(s) - assuming there is more than one, you should not be talking about SEO, PPC, or advertising. These are all just more tools in a much fuller arsenal of weapons we are getting to get a bigger foot print over the Internet.

If you are not including blogging, video and article distribution - at the least, along with SEO and PPC then what value you are you really bringing. It is time to start the hard work.

If this report is correct then by 2011 Internet marketing spend will be the dominate media. I say - lets see. Great strides are being made with mobile and I can forsee other methods of communication being used more as well.

The media moves so rapidly with so many alternatives how can anyone predict where it will be a year from now let alone by 2011. I think more correctly it might say that the advertisers will be moving out of the shotgun advertising that is still predominate and the rifle oriented media will be dominate but I would not say any more than that.

The big thing - in my mind - that will impact the model is the influx of new workers from high school and college that grew up with online media and their expectations and what they are willing to put up with in terms of encroachment of their space and movements.

Having 2 teenagers and both afraid to be anything but plugged in 24/7 I am not so sure they care whether anyone tracks what they are doing or when - they want everyone to know - but of course only those they choose. That is the key - to be invited into the circle.

Those forms of advertising that can figure out how to be invited without being toooooooooooooo salesy but get results will be the winners - I will be interested in your thoughts on this.

I agree - there are any number of tools that can be used to promote a client, but people seem willing to limit themselves to just the one that is talked about in the news the most, not the one(s) that will do them the most benefit.

I also feel, however, that this isn’t just limited to the tools of online. An overall marketing strategy should include everything that is appropriate for what the client brings to the table: Internet advertising, outdoor, social media, radio, television, print, public relations - on a per client basis.

Not all of these work for everyone or every budget, but the right combination is certainly going to be more effective than just tagging some pages with keywords and calling it a day.
