Small Business Online Marketing Tips: Episode 1

Developing a website or diving into the world of online marketing can seem pretty daunting, especially to small businesses. Since many don’t have web designers on staff or the technical know-how, I thought that an occasional post highlighting resources that small businesses will find helpful in their online marketing efforts would be in order. Today’s recommendations focus on information rich resources that everyone should appreciate:
Yahoo Design Pattern Library – You don’t have to be a designer to use this resource that is part of the Yahoo Designer Network. The Design Pattern Library offers guidance on website design based on generally accepted web design standards and experience, with the goal to provide the best possible user experience. Pattern Categories are written in a simple, easily understandable manner and touch on areas including:
- Layout
- Navigation
- Selection
- Rich Interaction
- Social
Cre8asite Forums – Ever have the need to ask a web development or online marketing question and felt alone? Cre8asite Forums is a community of friendly, helpful people that takes the statement “There is not such thing as a dumb question” to heart. Guests may look through the forum threads, but users must register to post questions (free).
The Marketing Over Coffee Podcast - This is currently my favorite podcast. Chris Penn and John Wall discuss developments and offer advice in online marketing while hovering over an early morning coffee at the Dunkin’ Donuts in Natick, Massachusetts. Complete with the sounds of the donut machines ringing in the background, the guys touch on search engine marketing, social media and related topics. This is an audio program, so you can either listen to it on your desktop computer, or download it to an Mp3 player using your favorite Podcatcher, like iTunes. Beware: Have a pen and paper at the ready because these guys pop out ideas that almost everyone will find useful.
