Mike Hilbert Uses Social Media WellMike Hilbert knows a lot about social media. Does he use Twitter? No. Is he active on Facebook? Not really. Is Mike uploading videos to YouTube? No Way.

First I want to clarify that I know Mike but he’s not a client of mine, nor am I a client of his. He’s familiar with the social media tools and may spend a few minutes per week on LinkedIn, but that’s it. Regardless he uses social media well.

Mike Hilbert interacts and communicates with people. His approach to social media has helped him successfully grow Great Prospects his business that helps companies find leads and generate sales. Like most successful social media strategies, Mike’s has developed over time, much like his business.

Great Prospects is very different today than it when it first started, thanks to Mike’s social media skills. Originally a clipping service focused on Philadelphia-area newsmakers, the company provided clients a weekly list of people and businesses in the news, including their valuable contact information. As the business grew, Mike used his social skills to interact with his clients and prospects to find additional ways to increase the value of his service. Mike expanded his services to include contacting prospects on the clients’ behalf and when the results didn’t achieve expectations, he continued to seek client input. The result was improved performance for both clients and the business. Clients received a much more valuable service including accountability, ease of use and dramatically improved results, while Great Prospects created a much more satisfied client base and a better renewal rate.

Could Mike have used some of the new social media tools? Perhaps. But it’s important to understand that while tools are great, communication is the goal. Mike communicates with his prospects and customers to continually refine the system so it works for them; so far he has been successful. Great Prospects now includes coaching, targeted leads and a system of introductions to the leads.

What many fail to remember is that social media is not just about the tools, but interaction, engagement, dialogue and discussion.
